Hotel

What does the word hospitality mean to us? It means offering our guests something that goes beyond the simple hotel room and that has the flavour of an experience. You will stay in the heart of the historic centre of Trapani, a stone's throw from the sea, a sea that represents the heart of Mediterranean history.

dettaglio hotel San Michele

In a city such as Trapani, hospitality has the flavour of history. Hotel San Michele was born within the walls of a building that for centuries has kept one of the many souls of this area. The rooms of its oratory, from the 1700s to the middle of the last century, hosted the Misteri statues of the traditional procession on Good Friday which, with its over 400 years of history and its 24-hour duration, represents one of the most suggestive events in Europe.

Between technology and tradition

Realizing a modern and functional hotel within a historic building is a fascinating adventure that we have the pleasure to share with you. Our architects have thoroughly studied the warmth of this treasure chest of history in the historic centre of Trapani and have redesigned it to combine tradition and modernity. A wide use of local handicrafts to create comfortable and welcoming environments, the harmonization of colours and shapes of every single room and the search for those precious details go to make the difference between any other hotel room and a place where you can really experience your stay.

A prestigious
building

Inside Hotel San Michele

We are within the vestiges of an ancient church, originally built in 1436 . The building experienced its evolution in full Renaissance when it was enlarged to become the place that would, for the rest of the year, host the "vare" (the bases with the statues) that, in Trapani at Easter, make up the spectacular Procession.

For the first time in Trapani, the Renaissance-style Church had a dome built by the Arab-Byzantine technique. The entrance was preceded by a courtyard in the Via San Michele (St Michael); Entering to the left there was a chapel with the white marble statue of the Archangel. The church was quite small in size: 6 metres wide and 12metres in length.

Unfortunately, time and disinterest destroyed most of the architectural and historical beauties of the old building. But in its reconstruction we always tried to preserve the vestiges of that time and, indeed, to enhance them by including them in the functional and welcoming architecture with which we chose to build the hotel. Among the most obvious details are the remnants of one of the aisle arches that surrounds the atrium, or the inserts of ancient pottery we used as "rugs" and also as inserts on some ceilings.

In addition there is the ancient staircase of Trapani a real masterpiece of the “master builders” and the pride of the craftsmen’s guilds of the city of Trapani.
